Embroidery

Embroidery is letters or pictures that are stitched onto a garment or item.  Embroidery can be done by hand or it can be done by a computer driven sewing machine called an Embroidery Machine.  Here at KJ's Designs we embroider using an Embroidery Machine.  The differences in the embroidery methods are explained in more detail below.  You will also get helpful insight into how and why embroidery is priced a certain way. Let's start with the differences.

Embroidery  By Hand

This method is actually done by a regular sewing machine.  The garment is hooped in a wood or plastic hoop for the purpose of keeping the fabric stretched out during stitching.  The fabric is moved around by hand as the sewing machine stitches to make a design.  This method was the first means of embroidery.  The upside to hand embroidery is the design has a unique look to it the stitches are usually not evenly spaced so this design has a rough looking quality, and no two designs look the same. Digitizing is not needed for this method because the design is done by looking at the artwork you provide, so that will save you a digitizing charge.  Digitizing is mentioned on the previous page.  The downside is this method is time consuming and difficult therefore the price is usually higher per piece and because it's done by hand it may take days or even weeks to get one piece.  The price of the stitching will probably be more then it would cost to have a design stitched & digitized using the other method.  Since the digitizing is a one time fee per design it may be more economical to go with Computerized Embroidery.

Computerized Embroidery

Computerized Embroidery is done by an Embroidery Machine, this type of embroidery has become very popular and is fast and efficient.  First you have do have your design made into a format that an embroidery machine can understand the preparation of the artwork is called, Digitizing or Punching. Digitizing is the creation of a stitch file sort of like a map that tells me machine where the certain stitches will go and what needle to sew with.  Most embroidery machines have multiple needles, and each needle is usually threaded with different color threads.  When a design is sewn commands in the design file tell the machine to change to the next needle.  The upside to this method is multiple pieces can be stitched fairly quickly.  The design is usually exactly like the last cause they are all stitched from the same file.  The cost to stitch the design is fairly low.  The downside is if you lose your design disk it has to be made all over again  you have to pay a separate charge to have the design digitized.
